If you want to turn your vacation into a real experience, you’d better allocate some time to some natural and historical sightseeing in the area. In less than an hour’s drive you can get to the famous Belogradchishki Skali, one of Bugaria’s Seven Wonders. Magurata cave is just 13 km away from the town of Dimovo, and just above the village of Gara Oreshetz you can find a number of karst caves. Pech cave has been an object of exploration for two years. Its beauty rivals that of Magurata. Mirizlivka cave, which is closed to visitors, is unique for its bright-blue coloured stalactites and stalagmites. There are three mountain huts in the area, situated within the breathtaking scenery – Izvor, Planinitza and Bashovitza. Within 3 km from Gara Oreshetz, on your way to Belogradchik, you can find the cave Jivanina Dupka. According to archaeologists, it was inhabited by people some 1 600 000 years ago, and excavations are still under way there. Near the neighbouring village Izvor is situated one of the two Orthodox monasteries in the Vidin area – “Uspenie na Presveta Bogoroditza” (“The Assu of Most Holy Mother”). It was built 100 years before Rila monastery, and has witnessed the break-up of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, as well as the Ottoman invasion.
